Vanguard wraps up its All Cans on Deck food drive!

By Caitlin Custer, Donor Outreach Coordinator

vanguardOn July 17, Vanguard held the wrap-up event for its All Cans on Deck food drive for 2013. The event took place at four of Vanguard’s campuses: Arizona, North Carolina, UK and Pennsylvania, bringing in 654,502 pounds of food as an organization. The Pennsylvania campus held food drives and different contests to raise money to purchase food in bulk at all of its 25 buildings.

The Food Bank of Delaware was honored to be included as one of Vanguard Pennsylvania’s seven recipients. They were able to collect 252,872 pounds of food, along with 4,881 pounds of baby items and 617 pounds of persocaitlinnal care items. The Food Bank of Delaware was the recipient of 43,766 lbs of food, making this the most successful Vanguard drive yet!

The wrap-up event was attended by Vanguard employees, representatives from all of the receiving organizations and members of the press.  I was able to represent the Food Bank of Delaware, along with Larry, our Development Director, and John anVanguard 2d Johnny, two of our wonderful drivers.

Joe McGill, one of the coordinators of the drive, addressed the crowd, “what makes our drive so successful every year is the tone from the top. From the senior staff to the officers in every single building, the support we get just adds to how successful we are. And I don’t think all of these building captains could have been this successful if it wasn’t for the support that we got from the management team on all levels.” It certainly was a success, we were given so much food that our drivers had to make a second trip!

The next day, Vanguard employees “followed the truck” back to our Newark facility and pitched in by sorting some of their own donations so that we can start getting it out to the public.

We are so thankful to Vanguard for another extremely successful year of All Cans on Deck!
