Bank of America and the Food Bank of Delaware announced last week that the bank will provide a two-for-one match of donations to Feeding America’s holiday “Give a Meal” program. Through this match, individuals will be able to triple the impact of their donations and provide meals to people in need in Delaware and across the country.
The bank announced the Give a Meal support at our Newark warehouse last week, where forty volunteers from the bank’s executive team assisted us with a Thanksgiving meal box distribution. Together we distributed approximately 1,500 free holiday boxes throughout the day to organizations that serve Delawareans struggling to put meals on the table.
In addition to the volunteer efforts, Bank of America also presented a $35,000 donation for our Milford Branch expansion capital campaign in honor of the Thanksgiving season. The gift is in addition to $20,000 already committed by Bank of America for the expansion project.
Donating to Give a Meal is simple. Contributions can be made online at http://www.bankofamerica.com/give or www.feedingamerica.org/BankofAmerica. Local donors can direct their contribution to the Food Bank of Delaware.
For every $1 donated through Give a Meal, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation will make a $2 contribution up to a total match of $1.5 million – making three times the difference for those in need. The Give A Meal contribution is in addition to the bank’s $1 million contribution to the national office of Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger relief organization.
“Through the Give a Meal campaign, we’re looking to support the Food Bank of Delaware and their efforts to address the pervasive hunger rates and growing demand for food assistance,” said Chip Rossi, Delaware market president for Bank of America.
“We provide emergency food for an estimated 241,600 different people annually,” said Patricia Beebe, Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO. “This is only possible with partnerships and investment from community-minded organizations like Bank of America.”
This is the third year that the bank has partnered with Feeding America. Bank of America is the exclusive sponsor of the Give a Meal program this holiday season. The program was a resounding success last year providing the financial equivalent of more than 26 million meals. The need for hunger relief continues to be great this year. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 50.1 million people in the United States are struggling with hunger. Of that number, 16.7 million are children.
So far this year, Bank of America employees have donated more than 17,000 volunteer hours to hunger-related nonprofits as part of the company’s broader commitment to service and will volunteer additional hours during the holiday season as part of the company’s pledge to donate more than 1.5 million employee volunteer hours in 2012. Since 2009, Bank of America has invested nearly $20 million in hunger and critical needs programs, with a focus on supporting nonprofits like Feeding America and the Food Bank of Delaware across the United States.
