We were honored to be participate in a special event at the Dover Safeway today! As part of this weekend’s NASCAR festivities at Dover Downs, Smithfield and the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) presented the Food Bank of Delaware with a truckload of Smithfield hams and assorted pork products! On hand were representatives from Safeway, UFCW, Smithfield and the Smithfield #43 NASCAR vehicle. We were also happy to welcome City of Dover Mayor Carleton Carey! Following some quick remarks from local officials, an excited group of community members participated in a “ham brigade” to help unload hams from the tractor-trailer! At the conclusion of the event, the truck traveled to our Milford and Newark facilities for delivery.
Thanks to the generosity of Smithfield, UFCW and Safeway, we have an additional 30,000 pounds of Smithfield products to distribute to Delawareans struggling to make ends meet!
“We are so appreciative of Smithfield’s and the UFCW’S generosity,” said our President and CEO Patricia Beebe. “With one in four Delawareans struggling with hunger, this donation will go a long way in ensuring that residents of our state have hot meals to put on the table.”
“Hunger is Safeway’s top charitable priority so we are proud to be able to partner with our friends at Smithfield and the UFCW to facilitate this substantial donation to the Food Bank of Delaware,” said Greg Ten Eyck, Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations for Safeway’s Eastern Division.
“We are so proud to be able to say that we are in our third year of the Feeding the Hungry tour. We’ve made more than 100 stops traveling from Miami, Florida all the way to Anchorage, Alaska,” said Dennis Pittman, Public Affairs Director for Smithfield. “We are delighted to be able to provide much needed food assistance to the Dover community and a wonderful organization such as the Food Bank of Delaware.”
“Our union represents meat packing, food processing and grocery workers across the country; and I often say that UFCW members are proud to put the food on America’s table. This is the third year of our Feeding the Hungry tour, and together we have put 14 million meals on the tables of those who need it most,” said Joe Hansen, International President, UFCW. “All across the country, UFCW members are on the front lines of efforts to improve and strengthen their communities, and this partnership with the Food Bank of Delaware reflects their unwavering commitment to protect and advocate for families during tough times.”
Feeding the Hungry is part of the UFCW’s renewed commitment to lead communities in finding solutions based on shared responsibility. UFCW members have a long history of helping those in need, not only for the well-being of workers, but also for the broader community, especially in difficult times.
Smithfield Foods and its independent operating companies have a long history of stocking food banks, supporting after-school nutrition programs and providing food relief in the wake of natural disasters. In January 2008, Smithfield established their Helping Hungry Homes® initiatives to help ensure that American families in need do not go hungry.
