An evening at the Governor’s Youth Volunteer Service Awards

By Trevor Turner, Programs Outreach Coordinator

I was honored to attend last night’s Governor’s Youth Volunteer Service Awards dinner at Dover Downs! More than 200 people gathered to honor the work of 13 outstanding youth volunteers and six youth volunteer groups! I had the opportunity to sit with one of the 13 Governor’s Youth Volunteer of the Year winners, Chris Willis, and his wonderful family! Chris was nominated by the Food Bank’s volunteer department and won in the Human Needs category!

Chris donated more than 600 hours to the Food Bank last year and volunteers every weekday. Chris’ commitment has earned him the title of Lead Volunteer at the Food Bank! He assists the volunteer department with the day-to-day operations of the volunteer room in our Newark warehouse. In addition, he oversees the packing of food boxes for our Senior Nutrition Program and weekend food for the Backpack Program. The Backpack Program provides food for children at risk of hunger when school is not in session.

In addition to Chris’, another Food Bank of Delaware volunteer, Weston Williams, was also honored for his volunteer work at serveral nonprofits in Kent County. Weston was nominated by the Harrington Sunshine 4-H Club and volunteers at our Milford Branch. In the past year he has organized a peanut butter and jelly drive for kids, and helps out our Hunger-Relief Partner, the Felton United Methodist Church. He assists at the Senior Mobile Food Pantry by organizing cleaning products and ensuring that seniors with pets receive a bag of pet food.

We’re thankful for all of the support we receive from the community. We’re so proud of both Chris and Weston for their commitment to our vision of a community free of hunger!
