After weeks of collecting canned and boxed goods of all shapes, sizes and colors, ING DIRECT and its canned replica of the Wilmington Train Station has been declared the Best Overall Winner of our DelawareCAN competition!
In an effort to help stock our shelves and ensure that hungry Delawareans have access to healthy foods, we launched our first-ever DelawareCAN competition in early October. The competition provided a creative way to collect much-needed food and create a spirited competition in Delaware’s business community. Companies held food drives and competed to create sculptures out of the food items collected. In total, we received more than 10,000 pounds through the DelawareCAN competition.
The following Delaware businesses were declared winners by our panel of eight judges. Among the judges were First Lady Carla Markell and Annie Coons, wife of Senator Chris Coons.
Best Overall: ING DIRECT
Best Use of Labels: Barclays – Wilmington Riverfront
Best Meal: Barclays – Prides Crossing
Best Use of Food Bank’s Most-Needed Items: JPMorgan Chase
Best Corporate Spirit: Dupont
“With a commitment to helping those less fortunate, ING DIRECT has always believed in giving back to the communities in which we work and live,” said Cheryl Murphy, ING DIRECT Community Affairs Manager. “As the holiday season approaches, we were thrilled to team with the Food Bank of Delaware to provide food for hungry families and incredibly honored to be the first winners of the DelawareCAN contest. The Associates look forward to next year and have set the bar to exceed the 7,000 items collected so we can feed even more families.”
“We are so happy with the response we received in year one of the DelawareCAN competition,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Patricia Beebe. “We certainly created a spirit of competition amongst Delaware businesses, but more importantly, we raised a significant amount of food for Delawareans struggling to put healthy meals on the table and heightened awareness of the critical issue of hunger in Delaware.”
“Seeing so many great people involved with collecting healthy food for the Food Bank of Delaware was inspiring,” said First Lady Carla Markell. “I hope to see the participants take it to another level next year and see competitive drives within corporations as well as outside. It’s all for a great cause and there are many children and families throughout Delaware that are in need of healthy food. I feel deep gratitude to all who participated.”
