A multi-month “Strike-Out Hunger” campaign with our friends at Perdue and the Delmarva Shorebirds wrapped up on Tuesday night at the Perdue-sponsored “Strike-Out Hunger” All-Star game at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury.
Perdue sponsored this year’s game on behalf of three Delmarva food banks, Maryland Food Bank Eastern Shore Branch, Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia Eastern Shore Branch and the Food Bank of Delaware. The campaign produced more than a quarter million meals across South Atlantic League (the baseball league the Shorebirds belong to) communities!
Here in Delaware, Perdue and other partners in Kent and Sussex counties hosted Strike-Out Hunger food drives! In total more than 6,000 pounds of food were collected for hungry Delawareans! At Tuesday’s game I was lucky enough to represent our organization and accept a $3,000 grant from the Perdue Foundation as part of the opening game festivities. This $3,000 was in addition to a $1,000 donation made by Food Lion on behalf of Strike-Out Hunger and a generous matching gift from Perdue as a result of strikeouts made throughout the campaign.
In addition to foods and funds, we also hosted volunteers from both Perdue and the Shorebirds and even received a special visit from Sherman Shorebird during one of our volunteer events!
The impact of Perdue and the Shorebirds support is far-reaching:
- From financial donations alone we will be able to provide 29,332 meals to Delawareans in need
- Donated food totals will allow us to distribute more than 4,630 meals to families and individuals in the First State
Again, a special thank you to everyone at Perdue and the Shorebirds for their commitment to ending hunger in Delmarva’s communities!
