What’s summer in Delaware without a trip to the Delaware State Fair! Fortunately for fair goers, on Monday, July 23 attendees are encouraged to bring four Food Lion-brand canned goods in exchange for free gate admittance to the Delaware State Fair from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. It’s thanks to a new partnership with Food Lion, the Delaware State Fair and the Food Bank. With the help of our community we hope to collect more than 5,000 pounds of food to help feed hungry local residents.
“We are pleased to help the Food Bank of Delaware provide meals for local families in Delaware,” said Bob Mills, Food Lion district manager for the Dover area. “This is a great way to provide our customers and Delaware residents with a chance to both attend the fair for free while helping local families.”
Donations received through the effort will assist families in Kent and Sussex Counties struggling to put food on the table. Through its network of hunger-relief partners, the Food Bank of Delaware currently serves more than one in four Delaware residents.
“We’re very excited about this new partnership with two groups who have always been supportive of our organization,” said our President and CEO, Patricia Beebe. “The Food Bank of Delaware is always looking to collaborate in order to assist Delaware families struggling to make ends meet. What better way to help families in need by spending a day at the Delaware State Fair.”
Volunteers from Food Lion, Lake Forest School District and the Food Bank of Delaware will accept donations at Gates 1 and 7. Collection boxes will also be set up at the remaining entry gates. No items stored in glass will be accepted. Some of our most-needed items includes the following:
- Canned fruits and vegetables
- Canned soups
- Tuna fish
- Peanut butter
- Canned meats
- Cereal
