We announced last week that we are seeking businesses, faith-based organizations, community organizations and others to host food drives to benefit Perdue’s Strike Out Hunger Challenge on Delmarva.
Through the challenge, Perdue will match up to $10,000 worth of food, funds and volunteer hours raised by the community during the Shorebirds’ regular season and provide an additional $5,000 earned through the Shorebirds’ strikeouts. The Food Bank of Delaware will split the $15,000 amongst two other Delmarva food banks – Food Bank of Maryland and Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia.
“We’re excited to partner with Perdue and the Shorebirds’ on this exciting initiative,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Patricia Beebe. “With the support of our entire community we can not only meet this challenge, but exceed it! With more than one in four Delawareans depending on our network of emergency food assistance, the time to help is now.
Some of our most needed items include:
- Canned fruits and vegetables
- Canned soups
- Tuna fish
- Peanut butter
- Canned meats
- Pop-top microwaveable meals (raviolis, spaghetti and meatballs, etc.)
- Fruit cups
- Shelf-stable milk
In addition to hosting food drives, the community can also get involved by organizing fundraisers or volunteering at our facility in Milford.
Those who collect more than 20 boxes/bags of donated food may make arrangements with us to have donations picked up. In an effort to save money on transportation costs, we ask that donations of fewer than 20 bags/boxes be dropped off at our Milford facility located at 1040 Mattlind Way.
